Typically, I use DxO Optics Pro for my conversions due to its quality optical corrections, but the best conversions outside of optical correction is found with RawTherapee, which can extract more tonal gradations due to its high-precision conversions. They seem to be out phasing it- the new software doesn't edit much. In Photoshop's converter I tried a few settings and wasn't happy. I'll have to try them again when I have more time.

It's an excellent raw editor, in particular because of the lens correction and perspective adjustments.
One gripe about Optics Pro 9, when opening a single raw file the program insists on loading every image from the folder in a strip below the main work screen. It's a completely unnecessary 'feature' that contributes to the programs slowness, and there's no way to make it stop doing that. View NX-2 is, as the name implies, primarily a viewing and organizing tool.
It does have some really basic editing tools and can convert. View NX-2 has been replaced by View NX-i, which isn't significantly different with regards to overall design or functions. I used to use Aperture but found NX-D producing more pleasing colors to my eye with less steps. Probably has something to do with being Nikon software. I also have View but it is very limited. I never use it. Not even sure why Nikon offers it as an option. I still miss things like selective brushes from Aperture but I use photography for my entertainment only, so I don't need to be too picky about heavy post-processing. One reason they might keep the programs separate still, the View program contains the Transfer software.
