Also, you should try to keep your server roles separate if you can. Use separate servers as DC's and file servers. Separating the servers is not really an option, as this is a school with a limited budget. Pretty much both servers have had the roles they are serving.
The drive has not been formatted - and the USN journal has not been deleted afaik. Its possible that a checkdisk has truncated it - but I do not remember that happening.
Ok so your domain name is alright then and I can understand your server roles for a limited environment. Is the fileserver found on appserver using the fqdn that the event log entry is saying is missing? Have you checked out any FRS tools?
The primary is the catalogue server - or the one holding the schema. Primary being the one in control, any others being secondary. I haven't tried a checkdsk yet as it indicated that one of the causes of this could be a checkdsk. Just one last thing, although you have the errors, are they actually causing any problems or are you trying to resolve the issue for peace of mind? FRS will keep retrying.
